Profiles of Poverty and Potential in Picture Books: Stories that Affirm and Inspire

Presented by Christina Dorr

Christina Dorr will present on the role illustrators share with authors on creating inspiring stories. She will explore the lives and work of illustrators who are familiar with poverty and how the challenges and joys are foundations for their work. Attendees will also explore inspiring picture book biographies of notable individuals who were raised in generational poverty and have successfully escaped its hold. These books provide starting blocks for children to be validated, inspired, and subsequently encouraged to share their own stories.

Implementing a March Madness Book Bracket in Your Classroom or School

Presented by Stephanie Myers

Stephanie Myers has implemented a number of March Madness Book Brackets for her school which has involved children and staff from the elementary and middle schools. This session will offer participants a step-by-step guide to creating and implementing their own March Madness Book Bracket to encourage communal reading of selected books, including a design for reading with books and listening to books during a virtual learning setting. Children love voting on the books they have read and watching a favorite book move through the bracket. Additional topics that will be covered include selecting a theme, selecting books, creating materials and how to run the bracket.

In-Person Watch Opportunity

Due to COVID-19 restrictions being lifted since initial planning of our virtual conference, we’ve decided to extend an in-person watch opportunity to those who do not feel comfortable using Zoom.

This in-person watch opportunity will take place in the Mazza Museum, with breakout sessions splitting off into separate rooms within the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion. If you choose this option, you will be watching the conference in the Zoom format on a large screen as a group.

Lunch and snacks will not be offered during this in-person watch opportunity. Limited campus dining is available if you would like to dine on your own.
