The University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum, located in the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion, will have a grand opening for the Laiho Gallery, the first gallery dedicated to paper-engineered picture books, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12.

A ribbon cutting will take place and artist Matthew Reinhart, who donated more than 300 works to be displayed in the gallery, will be speaking. Refreshments such as cake pops and popcorn will be served.

The public is invited to attend, but reservations must be made by Friday, Nov. 6 by calling (419) 434-5521 or emailing Kerry Teeple, museum administrative assistant and accounting officer, at [email protected].

The 400-square-foot Laiho Gallery, built within existing space, is being made possible by the generosity of Mazza Museum docent Ginny Laiho and her husband Rikhard, who wanted the gift to be in honor of his wife’s dedication to the museum. It will feature rotating pieces of pop-ups, fold-outs, die-cuts and other three-dimensional original literary works of art.

Reinhart, a New York Times bestselling paper engineer, illustrator and author, donated to the museum originals from each book he has created, along with more than 250 pop-up books from his collection that date back to 1960. Some of his donations will be the first to be displayed in the gallery.

Reinhart’s presentation will be followed by book sales and autographing.
